  Cadillac Ciel Concept

Here’s a piece of blue-sky thinking from Cadillac. The US firm has pulled out the surprise of the show, by unveiling a brand new concept car at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.   Called the Ciel Concept – the French word for sky – the elongated cabriolet has been designed as the ultimate vehicle for cruising the west coast of America. It's got four-seats and four-doors and, in true American style, has an enormous footprint on the road. It measures 30cm longer than a Cadillac CTS saloon and is over five metres in length, bumper to bumper.   Suicide doors offer unimpeded access to the leather-wrapped cabin, and 22-inch alloys fill the arches. Providing the power is a 419bhp twin-turbo version of GM's 3.6-litre V6 engine, twinned with an electric motor for additonal shove.   Just a design study at the moment, Cadillac says the Ciel points the way towards a softer design language for future models.

Toyota Camry prices the same or less for 2012

Toyota is keeping the same prices for some 2012 Camry and Camry hybrid models and cutting prices on the rest of the models compared with last year's lineup. The entry-level Camry is priced at $22,755 for 2012, including destination. The Camry LE gets a $200 price decrease from 2011, at $23,260. The four-cylinder SE model is $965 less in 2012, at $23,760, while the V6 version remains priced at $27,400. The four-cylinder XLE gets a $2,000 price cut from the previous model year, available for $25,485, while the V6 version will still cost $30,605.  The Camry hybrid is offered in LE and XLE trims. The LE hybrid has a price cut of $1,150--it's available for $26,660--and the XLE hybrid is $800 less than in the previous model year, at $28,160.  The seventh-generation 2012 Camry will hit dealerships this October, and the 2012 Camry hybrid models will arrive in November.

Volkswagen to unveil one-seat electric car

Volkswagen will unveil a one-seat experimental car with an electric powertrain in September as the carmaker works to cut emissions and develop future driving concepts. The concept vehicle will be designed for limited journeys, VW spokeswoman Ruth Holling said Monday, confirming remarks by VW research chief Juergen Leohold to the Financial Times. The car will be presented Sept. 8 in Berlin. Leohold declined to comment to the paper on the car's range or top speed ahead of its unveiling. He said the one-seater would be "even better" than the XL 1 Super Efficient vehicle, a diesel-electric plug-in hybrid unveiled in January, which gets 261 mpg.   VW is aiming for battery-powered vehicles to account for 3 percent of sales by 2018, the year it's aiming to sell more than 10 million cars, sport-utility vehicles and vans, CEO Martin Winterkorn has said.

VW plans to bring electric versions of its Golf hatchback and the new Up city car to market by 2013.

     Bentley Continental GTC: first pics
This is the new Bentley Continental GTC, announced ahead of its official world premiere at - you guessed it - the Frankfurt motor show.   The second-generation of Bentley's iconic drop-top has been "improved in virtually every aspect" over the first, some feat considering the original was a lightly monstrous machine.

Power from the 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine has swollen from 552bhp to 567bhp, while torque rises from an already gargantuan 479lb ft to 516lb ft, which is enough to send the echoes of the Big Bang skittering back into the corners of the universe. The 0-60mph dash is covered in 4.5 seconds (0-62mph in 4.8s), 0-100mph takes 10.9 seconds and the top speed is 195mph. In fact, 30-50mph takes only two seconds, and 50-70mph takes a blink-of-an-eye longer (2.4s). And should your moral allegiances force you into acting greenly, that W12 also runs on E85 biofuel too. That prodigious power output is, again, sent to all four wheels via a ‘Quickshift' six-speed auto ‘box (said to cut shift time by up to 50 per cent), while a new rear-biased torque split of 40:60 is said to reduce understeer and allow for "throttle steering". There's another name for that. Hooning.  Bentley says advanced manufacturing techniques have produced new aluminium front wings without the need for seams or welds, "creating the look and feel of a coach-built car", while you are suitably indulged inside with soft-touch leather, wood veneers, ‘cool-touch' metals, deep-pile carpets and a tailored, multi-layered fabric hood developed for optimum noise isolation. Rear passengers even get more legroom. Wolfgang Durheimer, Bentley chairman, said: "The GTC has always been the most emotional model in the Continental range and a showcase for Bentley design. It's a pure British convertible true to those classic Bentleys of the past, but the excellence invested in this model means we are now writing a new chapter for the Bentley convertible driver." Ah yes, the typical Bentley convertible driver. We'll set aside such quandaries for the time being, and allow you lot to wallow in the 149,350 pounds GTC's magnificence. Like it?

Watch the BMW M5 hit Laguna Seca

Good news! The twin turbochargers on the new BMW M5 were designed with a high level of compressor and turbine efficiency and were developed to work with the 4.4-litre V8's unique cross-bank exhaust manifold. More good news! This manifold optimises gas flow en route to aforementioned ‘chargers and features identical pipe lengths and a combustion chamber arrangement mirroring the firing sequence to ensure the gas flows through the ducts at an even rhythm. In fact, says BMW, the cross-bank exhaust manifold and twin turbo technology "play a key role in delivering a multilayered collage of sound": the exhaust pipe runs straight down the chassis with a large cross section, feeding out into the customary twin tailpipes. Why the engineering lesson? Because BMW North America has just posted a video of the new M5 hot-tailing around the famous Laguna Seca circuit. In the video, you will hear a glimpse - a howl, a brief clamour, a momentary rasp, if you will - of the V8.And for that reason alone, it is worth watching. Yes, it's only a glimpse, but we haven't heard the new Five fully exercise its vocal chords...

New Aston V12 Vantage GT3

Today is a good day. Today is the day we find out all the numbers behind the racey Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3, the insane-looking successor to AM's sumptuous DBRS9. Like its forbear, it's got a tuned production V12. The 6.0-litre's been dry-sump'd and shuffled down a bit in the engine bay to improve weight distribution and runs through an Xtrac six-speed sequential ‘box with a semi-automatic paddle shift. There's special carbon propshaft sending power to its rump. But how much power, we hear you scream? 600bhp and 700 torques. In a car that'll weigh 1250kg.To manage said power, it's got a stiffened shell and shorter wheelbase, the suspension geometry's been optimised for its lower race ride height, the fuel tank's been moved behind the driver's seat and there's a steel roll cage that helps prevent contortion through cornering and, erm, rolling. There's also race-developed ABS and traction control systems, enormous six-pot front calipers, a racing clutch, high speed pneumatic jack system, carbon fibre dash and as fire extinguisher system, which means you can literally take it from the showroom to the track (albeit on a trailer - it's not road legal).

It's eligible to run in several series, including the FIA GT3 Championship, ADAC Masters, Nurburgring VLN, Blancpain Endurance Series, British GT, Belcar and Open GT.

       The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class

It's a bit longer, a tad wider and a touch lower than before and has been thoroughly, thoroughly re-engineered. In fact, Merc development chief Dr Thomas Weber said: "No model change in the history of Mercedes has seen so many new developments introduced in one fell swoop".It gets a brand new 1.6-litre four-pot petrol engine, dubbed M270, available with 122bhp in the B180 and 156bhp in the B200. There's also a revised version of the four-pot diesel seen in the C and S-Class models: a 1.8-litre with 109bhp (in the B180 CDI) and 136bhp in the B200 CDI.Two options are offered for your arms, Merc's 7G seven-speed dual clutch auto - a premiere in this model - or a trad' six-speed manual with "low shift forces". The chassis gets ESP, a lowered centre of gravity and a new four-link rear axle, all of which make it "fantastically agile". You can option some sports suspension that lowers the car by 20mm and adds sports dampers with amplitude dependent damping. The previous generation was thoroughly delectable to drive, so there are good sign for this new one...  As you can see, it gets Merc's new corporate face, replete with those tasty new lights and shouty grille, pronounced wheel arches, new side skirts and even a roof spoiler. And despite being nearly 5cm lower than its predecessor, Merc claims there's better headroom and, after listening to customers, has installed a more upright seating position. The legroom of 976mm eclipses even its executive S-Class and E-Class siblings. There's the option of rearranging the interior with the Easy-Vario-Plus system, while high quality materials and precision workmanship - a Top Gear gripe with the old B-Class - have been used inside. There's even a TFT colour display to play with. The new Bee gets a dizzying complement of Santa's little helpers, including blind spot assist, attention assist, parking assist, a reverse camera and hill hold function. There's also the option of the COMAND multimedia system offering Internet access on the go so you can update your MyFace page and tell your Internet friends what you had for breakfast. It'll hit UK shelves in March 2012 with prices to be confirmed, but the current B-Class starts at 19,640 pounds. Interested in this premium, sporty mini-MPV

Three HUNDRED and thirty thousand. That's precisely how many pounds you'll need to buy the roadgoing Aston Zagato. That's 239,105 pounds more than the V12 Vantage it's based on...So how are Aston justifying the price tag? It's all about the styling, it seems. Designed to celebrate the golden anniversary of the similarly handsome DB4 GT Zagato, the hand-built body - an aluminium and carbonfibre melange - was penned by the Italian firm and sits on relatively untouched Vantage underwear. The engine's standard, too - it's the 6.0-litre V12, which produces a piffling 510bhp and 420 lb ft of torque. But it is very pretty. Very very pretty. And, considering just 150 are getting made, the chance of running into another one stands at comfortably long odds. We'll be able to bring you more pics of it after this year's Frankfurt motor show - Aston's showing off the sister car to the one we drove around the Nurburgring and the concept originally shown at Villa d'Este concours.

BMW M3 GTS goes to the Ring 24hr

Add caption
There were mullets aplenty, dodgy tattoos - including an otherwise attractive young lady who had Opel's ‘blitzen' logo on her back - and if you stood far enough away the drifting smoke made the place look like something from (I)Apocalypse Now(I). No doubt about it, the Nurburgring is not for the faint of heart. Or the faint of hair. But during the 24 hour race, and arguably even more so than at Le Mans, this is the place where racing fans really do get mightily stuck in. Short of pitching your tent actually on the circuit, you can't get much closer to the action than here. And there's plenty of it. It's also dead easy to get to. Eurostar to Calais, bomb along across the top of France for a bit, blat through Belgium past Brussels and Liege on the E40, and just as you're passing Spa, head south west to the Eifel Mountains. Now, in case you're wondering why we're telling you all this two months after the event, it's because we've now got a short film about how BMW got on in the race, and we thought you might like to see it. It's rather good.  As is the M3 GTS we drove there in. At first glance, this 444bhp lightweight iteration of the E92 M3 wouldn't be your first, second or possibly even third choice for a journey like this, and we didn't even realise that it had regular seat-belts as well as the ball-squeezing four-point harness until the last fuel stop on the way home. Berks. At 115k pounds, it's also comically and possibly even cosmically expensive. But it's also my current favourite car, primarily because its engine, gearbox and chassis, while individually brilliant, work together with a harmony that is surprisingly rare. Even as the sky turned as black as Motorhead's back catalogue and the rain came down as we thundered through Belgium, it didn't turn all jittery and horrible. And on the autobahn (dry, I might add), we later saw 180mph. Bloody marvellous. A handy racing car too, as you'll see if you watch the film (shot by Diz Williams). You'll also notice that with such a huge grid - 200-plus cars this year - it's at least two teams per garage, often more, and the pit-lane is more like a rugby scrum than anything else. The winning Manthey-Porsche team racked up a new distance record of 156 laps, just pipping the number one Muller/Farfus/Alzen/Lamy M3 GT by 4mins 23 seconds. A result that was made all the more knuckle-chewing thanks to a three-minute stop-and-go penalty incurred by Lamy after a spin at the Karussel...

Pound Car Concepts Revealed

Design studios that are participating in the 7th annual Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge have the daunting task of envisioning a “1,000 lb (454 kg) four-passenger vehicle that is both comfortable and safe, while delivering satisfactory driving performance without sacrificing the styling consumers demand." But the various concepts that the designers have come up with are nothing short of spectacular. Because the Cadillac Aera (Aero + Era) is equipped with alternative fuel, this futuristic 2+2 coupe boasts a 1,000 mile range. This coupe has an advanced body structure that "utilizes a polyhedral, 3D lattice, mono-formed frame with a flexible pressurized polymer skin for body panels and glass."

New Mazda MX-5 pictured

Lighter, cleaner and just as much fun to drive – the all-new MX-5 is nearly here.
Our artist’s impression, based on a technical drawing supplied by Mazda to the Tokyo Patent Office, shows how the featherweight roadster’s new face will look. The grille has been modelled on the original car’s oval shape, while the headlights have been given a distinct upslanting teardrop shape.  However, from what we can see in this exclusive image, the shrunken proportions are virtually identical to the 1989 car’s. The goal for chief engineer Nobuhiro Yamamoto was to lighten and downsize the model yet maintain current cabin space. An insider has told Auto Express that after exhaustive restyling, a kerbweight of around 950kg has been achieved. That’s thanks to the weight-efficient new Skyactiv chassis, powertrain and body. Our source explained that with a lighter car “you can downsize the powertrain”. As a result, the new six-speed MX-5 will have a 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine offering around 125bhp and with fuel economy of about 55mpg. The car is slated for a debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show, and is due to land in dealers in autumn next year.

At the most recent Frankfurt auto show, Renault unveiled their new 100% electric concept car, the Frendzy. Like several other modern concept cars, the Frendzy takes on the challenge of multi-faceted lifestyles, trying to meet the needs of people who work and communicate from their cars, and to serve them as their lives change over time. The Frendzy features a flexible interior with fold-down back and front passenger seats, a fabric roof that literally flexes to adapt to bulky objects transported in the vehicle, an asymetrical interior with family-oriented features on the left and work-oriented functions on the right, plus a Blackberry Playbook that docks near the driver’s seat and controls an exterior 37-inch widescreen that can be used for entertainment or advertising.

We’re not sure how practical it is to combine an exterior 37-inch widescreen display on the passenger rear sliding door with a chalkboard for children to draw on (we’re fairly sure the designer doesn’t have kids, who would love to draw on the whole car while they’re at it), but the idea of even having different doors on either side of the Frendzy is intriguing: slider on the right with no central pillar for easy loading, and center-opening doors on the left for loading the family in and out.

I found a really exciting prototype show car while traipsing around SEMA in Las Vegas today. Seems that Galpin Auto Sports of Van Nuys took a Ford Mustang GT convertible and went COMPLETELY NUTS on it. Sure, it started out as a 2008 Mustang GT, but it is completely unrecognizable now! Hand made composite body, voice command controled, even DUAL retractible steering wheels (left and right side drive, thanks to drive-by-wire technology)!!! In the deep, 3 layer, candy purple paint, it looks like something the Joker might drive… if he could handle the 1000 horsepower twin supercharged power!

Of course, it sits so low to ground here, at a height that it would be impractical on most any road or track, but thanks to air ride technologies’ suspension system, the computer constantly gauges the road for the optimum ride height and firmness of the ride itself. and still, it “cuts” quite a shape… and those headlights!

UNfortunately, when you come around the side of the car, you see get the impression that the car’s designer was heavily influenced by his childhood playthings… Mattel Hot Wheels®.
Still, Galpin Auto Sports was aiming for a vehicle straight from the car shows of the 60’s (Autorama) that sparked people’s imagination and excitement. Given that this vehicle is COMPLETELY road worthy and driveable and not just some clay work with paint and chrome stuck on it… I’d say they goal has been FAR exceeded!
